Lhyfe has opened a new hydrogen base in Sheffield, with the aim of leading hydrogen research, accelerating UK operations and supporting businesses in their transition to Net Zero.
The Sheffield site will be based in the Wizu Workspace within the city centre and it will play a key role in increasing the speed at which hydrogen is distributed across the region. The expansion will also present Lhyfe with the opportunity to use both its new base and its pre-existing site in Newcastle, to look into further opportunities around more production sites and partnerships, both locally and globally.
Currently Lhyfe has six production sites under construction, spread across Europe, plus it’s first facility in Pays de La Loire. Lhyfe has large plans for its plants, with aims for their hydrogen production capacity to reach a production rate of about 22 tons of green hydrogen daily. Lhyfe hopes that this production rate will be in place by the end of 2024 and from there, the rate will continue to increase to around 80 tons every day by 2026. This aim feeds into the plans the Government have, which involve green hydrogen. The Government has recently doubled its low-carbon hydrogen production expectations from 5GW to 10GW by 2030, the government’s goal is that at least half of the hydrogen will be green hydrogen and produced from Lhyfe’s plant.
To make the Government’s goal and Lhyfe’s goal achievable, the team has recently grown to six staff members and the company is currently holding a recruitment drive, with the aim of increasing and accelerating plant deployment. This highlights just how far Lhyfe have come since the launch of their UK operations in 2022.
The new base in Sheffield will be run by Stuart Sinclair and it will also work towards achieving the company’s aim of creating connections in academia with high-profile hydrogen research projects which are underway at the University of Sheffield.
