Denton Clutterbuck, Head of Aerospace, Defence & Rail at Altran UK, has been elected to the status of Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), in recognition of his significant and sustained achievements within the profession. Having trained initially in electronic engineering, Denton completed a Doctorate in High Integrity Software Development at Southampton University. He spent the early part of his career in a University spin-off, supporting companies across industries in the application of new techniques in critical software assurance and development. This was followed by the application of related mathematical techniques for mobile wireless radio frequency optimisation. Both of these technologies were brought to market through successful start-up companies that remain active over 20 years later, including the current SPARK programme within Altran. Denton subsequently launched other start-ups, internationally and in the UK, before developing his career in global engineering companies, working directly and with partners in many countries to offer advanced computer-based solutions to clients primarily in the telecoms, aerospace and defence sectors. In his current role at Altran UK, Denton leads the firm’s Aerospace, Defence & Rail practice, which delivers leading-edge innovation and engineering consulting services and solutions to clients including NATS, Airbus, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Thales. In 2013 alone, the awards garnered by Altran UK’s Aerospace, Defence & Rail practice include: • IHS Jane's Enabling Technology Award for 2013 and Duke of Edinburgh’s Navigation Award for Technical Achievement, both awarded to iFACTS, a ground-breaking predictive tool for air traffic controllers developed by NATS with the support of Altran and Lockheed Martin • West of England Aerospace Forum (WEAF) Award for Innovation & Technology for Growth, in recognition of its work on the Airbus/Advanced Integrated Rapid Geometry Morphing Environment (AIRGEOM) • NATS Supplier Performance Award in recognition of Altran’s consistently high quality of service • Airbus ESW Supplier Award for Sharklet Retrofit programme
