Leading engineering services and recruitment company KDC Group, based at Bournemouth Airport, is proud to demonstrate the success of its Apprentice scheme.
KDC has been working with Bournemouth and Poole College and Bournemouth University for a few years now and they have seen a regular supply of apprentices who have combined practical hands-on learning with classroom based teaching over a five year period.
“We explored the idea of employing graduates to add to our skills base, but in reality we just couldn’t find the right calibre of individual” said Peter Burden, KDC’s Chief Executive Officer. “So we spoke to the College and University and together we came up with a scheme whereby students that have studied A Levels are invited to join a five year apprenticeship that leads to a full degree qualification in engineering.”
Peter continued “By employing these young people we know we are getting enthusiastic and motivated individuals, who will receive a fantastic blend of practical hands-on experience in all areas of our business, and theoretical skills that will enable them to progress their careers through the company. Some of our best employees started as apprentices so we know this system works.”
“I have been a little disappointed with some of the reports I have seen this week during National Apprentice Week, where apprentices have been employed it seems purely to massage the unemployment statistics. We need to change the perception of apprenticeships, to ensure they are seen as a viable alternative to doing a straight degree post A‘Levels” Peter said.
Peter’s comments came as KDC exhibited at the Bournemouth and Poole College Open Event on 4th March, where they took along two of their current apprentices to talk to students.
